Dola Purnima or Dola Melan is one of the most popular festivals in Orissa. Usually this festival is celebrated in the month of Falgun (February - March). It is specially celebrated in Orissa for five days especially in the rural areas. The images of Krishna are worshipped form Dashami (10th day of the bright fortnight) to the full moon day. The festival is also known as Dola Yatra or Dola Jatra.
From the Falgun Dasami day, the idol of village deities, especially of Krishna, are carried to all the homes in the villages in a decorated palanquin (Viman) in a big procession. In each house the deity is offered Bhog - sweets made from the recent harvest and fruits. The last day which is Purnima (Full moon day) is celebrated as huge colourlful gathering and assemblage of all the Palaquin (Viman) from different villages from one location in common place for religious offerings to all Vimans .Next day of Purnima is the great festval of colour- Holi..
